Special issue: National Traditions of Sinology (ed. Joshua A. Fogel)
The latest issue of the Journal of Chinese History 中國歷史學刊 (Volume 7 Issue 2 2023) just came out. Prof. Joshua A. Fogel brought together 15 scholars who reflect upon the historiography of different national Sinological traditions in a series of essays which cover European and East Asian sinologies (Japan, Korea, and Vietnam), the latter having genuinely premodern sinological traditions. The essays bring to light the differences – in understanding the term “sinology” to begin with – but also the similarities between scholarly approaches to China, which were not only bound to the respective national languages in which research in China was conducted.
