Our project “Networks of knowledge about China: on the analysis and creation of complex disciplinary spaces” concerns the history of science and disciplines: it deals with actors in the circulation of knowledge with China since the middle of the 19th century. They are analyzed in terms of their complex identities and of the global networks which have contributed to the construction of knowledge and to the universality (and locality) of science through translation processes. After a first trilateral conference in 2021, and a second trilateral conference in 2022, where we reflected upon the role of actors and networks as well as terminologies and dictionaries that have contributed to the construction of sinology as a discipline and shaped the modern Chinese and European lexicons, the third and final conference is dedicated to the discussion of draft papers for a common publication on The Making of China Knowledge: People, Texts, and Spaces of Circulation (proposal for a special issue accepted by the Annali Ca’Foscari. Serie orientale. Through group discussions and presentations, the aim is to bring French, Italian and German sinologies closer together.

We are particularly happy to welcome this year Dr. Egas Bernard Bender De Moniz Bandeira (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) as our guest and Prof. Dr. Joachim Kurtz (Heidelberg University, Germany) as our keynote speaker. He will present a talk on:

“How to Write about Tushanwan as a Site of Knowledge: Testing Metaphors of Cultural Interaction”.
