My project is focused on the cultural intersections between China and Italy in the field of the transmission and acquisition of the literary text as cultural device. My research will explore two different kinds of approach, the first being the perspective of Mario Novaro (1868-1944) who crafted the earliest Italian version of the Zhuangzi in 1921 titled Acque d’Autunno. His work is not a translation but a re-elaboration in Italian of the earlier English and German translations then available, displaying Novaro’s understanding of the Daoist thought and his commitment to make it accessible to Italian readers. The second approach is related with Agostino Biagi (1882-1957), a Franciscan missionary who lived in China in the beginning of the 20th century and whose manuscripts have been recently discovered and donated to the Accademia della Crusca in Florence. Among Biagi’s forgotten manuscripts, his own Chinese translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia (the earliest complete translation known to date) clearly stands out as a major discovery in the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death. Besides, Biagi also drafted several translations of Chinese works from the literary and philosophical tradition, including the Daxue, Zhongyong and Zhuangzi. My investigation will analyse their different methodology and strategy in the translation of different cultural mindsets, as well as trying to outline some preliminary observations from the overall view of Biagi’s work.
